People all over the United States suffer from difficult health conditions that include periodic seizures, and some patients experience these seizures so often that they are diagnosed as seizure disorders. In addition, there are countless other people who suffer from conditions including bipolar disorders and migraine headaches. In essence, these medical problems can be traced back to issues with chemical imbalances in the brain and throughout the body, and drug companies have recognized this public health concern and formulated medications that are designed to help treat them and to alleviate the symptoms.

One of the leading medications designed to provide this type of help to these types of conditions is known as Depakote, which is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, which is a true corporate giant in the medical world. Generic Depakote is known as divalproex sodium Below you’ll find an overview of Depakote, including information regarding what Depakote is prescribed for, descriptions of clinical studies involving Depakote, a description of the FDA approval process for Depakote, an estimate regarding the number of people in the United States who have used this medication, the name of the generic equivalent of Depakote, minor Depakote side effects and major Depakote side effects.

Depakote – When and Why it is Prescribed

As mentioned above, Depakote is prescribed by doctors for patients with several different health conditions, including:

  • Seizure disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • The manic phase of bipolar disorders
  • Migraine headaches

In addition, Depakote has been used for off-label, meaning unapproved purposes, including certain patients with schizophrenia. Over time, those who have used Depakote have tended to show tangible progress in the minimization of the symptoms associated with these conditions, and as a result Depakote became extremely popular with physicians around the United States.

Clinical Studies Involving Depakote

As is the case with any drug, Depakote had to progress through different clinical trials in order to show not only that it was effective, but that it was safe to use. Below are three examples of clinical studies involving Depakote.

  • Bipolar Disorder, Mania, and Depakote

One prominent Depakote study involved two three-week, placebo-including studies of the effects that the use of Depakote had on mania, which is one of the aspects of manic bipolar disorder in which a patient becomes overly emotional and many times distraught. During these studies, one group of patients was given Depakote and the other was given a placebo to study and measure the results. Both of these studies showed that the use of Depakote provided relief from the symptoms of mania by more than 30 percent more than those patients who had been given a placebo.

  • Migraines and Depakote

The Depakote study on migraine headaches was set up in essentially the same manner, as it used subjects who had a history of migraines and who had experienced at least two migraine headaches in each of the previous three months. Over a period of four weeks, two-thirds of the subjects were treated with Depakote and the other one-third was given a placebo. At the end of the trial, it was concluded that those who had used Depakote had experienced a nearly 50 percent reduction in the onset and instances of migraine headaches than those who were given the placebo treatment.

  • Epilepsy and Depakote

Finally, a third study was performed on patients who suffered from epilepsy, a condition that features symptoms that include multiple periodic seizures. In this study 144 patients who had suffered from a minimum of eight epileptic seizures in the previous eight weeks were recruited, and once again one group was given Depakote and the other a placebo. The study concluded that twice as many patients that used Depakote experienced a reduction in epileptic seizures experienced a reduction in the number of complex partial seizures as compared to those who were given a placebo.

Depakote and the FDA Approval Process

Depakote has been approved for use in the United States several times by the FDA, and the initial approval for Depakote came in 1983 in regards to its treatment of epilepsy. In May of 1995, Depakote was approved for use in treatment of mania. Less than one year later, Depakote was approved for use in the reduction of the number of migraine headaches suffered by patients. Finally, in December of 2002, the FDA approved the use of Depakote ER for use as an adjunctive therapy for adults with epileptic seizures.

As one would expect with a drug that has been on the market for decades and that has been approved for treatment of so many common medical problems, Depakote has been widely used. It’s estimated that since its original approval, more than 2.4 million people in the United States alone have used Depakote for treatment of one of the disorders for which it was approved or for one of its off-label uses.

In addition, these estimates of use in the United States do not include the number of people who may be using generic equivalents of Depakote, which are available from a variety of different manufacturers, including:

  • Mylan
  • Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories
  • Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
  • Sandoz, Inc.
  • Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Inc.
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals USA
